On the afternoon of 18th April, the 11th National Student Chemistry Olympiad was organised by the Â鶹´«Ã½, Viet Nam National University in Ho Chi Minh City.

Notably, this year’s contest enjoyed the presence of Professor Morten Peter Medal from the University of Copenhagen in Denmark, the recipient of the 2022 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, who attended to share insights from his research on “Click Chemistry” with scientists, lecturers, and students passionate about this field.

The National Student Chemistry Olympiad is a traditional academic event for students who are passionate about chemistry and studying at universities and colleges throughout the nation. First held in 2003, the competition has taken place ten times, chaired by the Viet Nam Chemistry Association, with various universities and colleges hosting it in rotation. Over the years, it has attracted 1,242 students to participate.

In 2023, the event saw the participation of 48 teams comprising 236 contestants from 35 universities and academies nationwide, spanning a range of disciplines including pedagogy, natural sciences, engineering and technology, medicine and pharmacy, agriculture, forestry, fishery, construction, and defence and security.

During the opening ceremony, Associate Professor Trần Lê Quan, President of VNUHCM-Â鶹´«Ã½, expressed that the university had implemented a comprehensive preparation schedule regarding organisation and facilities, while also ensuring effective coordination with scientists across the country to develop a suitable and high-quality set of exam questions for the panels.

Associate Professor Nguyễn Trung Nhân, Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry, efficiently organised all facets of the contest, ensuring security and safety throughout the handling of exam questions, as well as the objective, fair, and accurate review and marking of both theoretical and practical exams.

Dr Äá»— Duy Phi, President of the Viet Nam Chemistry Association, stated that the content of the competition incorporates updated knowledge relevant to current issues, aiming to enhance students’ dynamism and ensure they remain attuned to the trends present in enterprises and society.

The contest took place for six days, from 17th to 22nd April. Candidates were allocated 180 minutes for the written examination, which comprised 30 minutes for theoretical questions and 150 minutes for practical experiments. The competition was segmented into three distinct categories predicated on individual capabilities.

  • Table A was designated for institutions specialising in chemistry and chemical engineering;
  • Table B was for institutions focusing on technology and chemical engineering;
  • Table C was for non-specialised chemistry universities and specialised chemistry colleges.

On the morning of April 4th, VNUHCM-Â鶹´«Ã½, in collaboration with the Centre for Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer (VNUHCM), held a seminar titled ‘Intellectual Property Exploitation at the University: Current State and Development Orientation’ in response to World Intellectual Property Day (April 26th) and to advance the implementation of the University’s Strategic Plan for 2021-2025.

Attending the programme from the VNUHCM were Assoc. Prof. Nguyá»…n Văn Hiếu, Deputy Head of the Science and Technology Department and Assoc. Prof. Từ Diệp Công Thành, Director of the Centre for Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer; from the VNUHCM-Â鶹´«Ã½ were Assoc. Prof. Trần Lê Quan, President and Assoc. Prof. Trần Minh Triết, Vice President; along with representatives from various units, scholars, and scientists from both inside and outside the University.

The seminar’s content focused on the current status of intellectual property registration and development orientations for the VNUHCM-Â鶹´«Ã½ in particular, as well as for higher education and research institutions in general, particularly in the context of autonomy. The aim was to establish a platform to assist scientists in registering for intellectual property rights protection and in commercialising intellectual property generated by the university.

During the seminar, Assoc. Prof. Từ Diệp Công Thành raised a pressing concern regarding the ineffective management of scientific research and technology transfer, particularly in terms of protecting intellectual property when these innovations are launched.

Additionally, Assoc. Prof. Phạm Văn Phúc, Director of the Stem Cell Institute, shared insights from the Institute’s experiences in the commercialisation of scientific research outcomes, including:

  1. Classification of research results.
  2. Technology maturity: technologies offered to clients must be sufficiently developed and tested in multiple instances, meeting the requirements of a maturity level of 7 or higher.
  3. Providing support to customers through technological assistance.
  4. Systematic technology research: creating a technology map, identifying technological capabilities, and establishing a technology roadmap.

At the seminar, two research groups led by Assoc. Prof. Äặng Thị Phương Thảo and D.Sc. Lê Khánh Duy received the President’s Certificates of Merit for their successful registration of an international patent.

On March 26th, in Thua Thien Hue, the Ministry of Education and Training, in collaboration with the Central Youth Union, held the 5th contest, “Students with start-up ideas” (SV*.STARTUP), 2023. In this year’s competition, the Organizing Committee has received over 500 projects from all educational institutions nationwide. As a result, there are 80 projects selected for the final round.

Accordingly, a group of students from the VNUHCM-Â鶹´«Ã½, combined with students of the VNUHCM-University of Technology, (Ms Phạm Thị Trang – Group leader of the class of 2019 in the Faculty of Biotechnology) excellently won the third prize with the project “Paper made from seashells”.

Exhibition space for the project “Paper made from seashells”

  • Project Idea: Every year, millions of trees are cut down to produce paper. In the paper industry, on average, the material for the production of 1 ton of paper is equivalent to white wood chips extracted from 18 mature trees with a trunk diameter of 15-20 cm (commonly Melaleuca, Acacia auriculiformis, Eucalyptus, Poplar, etc.). The rest of the tree, such as twigs, leaves, bark, etc., are wasted. In addition, the pulp-making process requires many chemicals to process the lignocellulose into a cellulose-rich pulp. Therefore, we wondered how to make paper with minimal chemicals and replace cellulose with renewable ingredients. By-products include shells, oysters, eggs, and other molluscs provide a rich source of bioavailable calcium carbonate and are easy to find and produce in large quantities. However, to bind calcium carbonate powder into paper sheets, we need an environmentally friendly bioplastic that is biodegradable and does not leave microplastics.
  • Product Description: Seashell paper products contain two main ingredients: calcium carbonate powder and PVA (Polyvinyl alcohol – a fossil-based water soluble, biodegradable polymer). The calcium carbonate powder from seashells and oyster shells bonded to thin sheets of paper on a bioplastic base (PVA). It is very safe and environmentally friendly.
  • Project value: The group expands other calcium carbonate sources, such as eggshells, to increase the sources of raw materials, reduce the amount of domestic waste and bring about a circular economy towards the 3R policy. Thereby bringing an economic basis for agriculture from by-products such as shells, seashells, oysters, eggs and other molluscs.
